Why in a country with freedom of speech are there phone bills?
Good question... Well, don't mistake "free" for "free-dom"- two different things and freedom is definitely not free (both literally and figuratively) but that's a whole other subject on its own. We surveyed a couple of sources (well, I did...) and I picked top 5 answers for this random and absurd question of the day.
5. "Because, if there are no phone bills, another's freedom to make profit would be violated!"
4. "They have the freedom to charge. Freedom of speech doesn't mean the products you use to speak are free."
3. "Everything has its price!"
2. "Freedom of speech is a right to (within reason) make your point, not the right to have someone else incur costs to allow you to do so over a great distance."- a very nerdy answer but it will do for our top 2.
But this is our best answer:
"It is free to talk. you need more equipment, so you're paying more. Writing a letter is much cheaper. for cell phones, you are paying for a service that didn't even exist 20 years ago. don't you appreciate all the work that went into inventing them? You are using freaking satellites for crying out loud."-Nicely put.. very well said... I couldn't agree more!
So, next time you complain about your phone bill and freedom of speech, think about something that could be worse like SNAIL MAIL!
